What வ means
It spells Tamil’s va syllable; alone, it is just a letter.
Bare வ spells the syllable transliterated as va: Tamil consonant letters carry a short a by default. A small mark called the pulli removes that vowel, making வ்; other vowel signs combine with வ to form syllables such as வா, வி, வெ, and வை.
If someone sends only வ, treat it as an isolated Tamil letter or writing sample unless nearby Tamil text gives it a word-level role.
Where did வ come from?
Its history runs through older Tamil scripts that changed form over time.
An early script called Tamil-Brahmi, adapted from the Brahmi writing system for Tamil sounds, appears on pottery and in rock-shelter inscriptions around the middle of the third century BCE.
Vatteluttu, another script used in southern India, appears in stone inscriptions from the 4th century CE and served Tamil and Malayalam in different regions. The modern Tamil alphabet developed from Pallava script, with some letters based on Vatteluttu; that lineage does not mean today’s வ is an unchanged ancient drawing.
How do I type வ?
On Windows, Tamil Phonetic accepts va; Tamil 99 uses a separate layout.
On Windows, select Tamil Phonetic, type va, and choose the intended Tamil suggestion. Tamil 99 has its own key map, so a key remembered from one layout may yield something else on the other.
Tamil vowel signs follow the consonant in the written sequence, though some appear before it or on both sides. That visual placement is normal shaping, not a change in reading order.
Neutral in Tamil writing; it contributes to a word rather than setting the writer’s tone.
Read a lone வ as an isolated Tamil letter unless the surrounding message gives it another role.
