Tamil letter ssa

35/72

In Tamil, ஷ writes a “sh”-like consonant, mainly in Sanskrit and other borrowed words. It keeps a spelling close to the source; a Tamilized spelling may use ச or ஸ instead. The letter comes through Grantha, a South Indian script used to write Sanskrit.

What ஷ means

It writes a “sh”-like consonant in borrowed words. In Sanskrit transliteration it is ṣa, a sibilant made with the tongue curled back; the comparison to English “sh” is approximate. The letter keeps a source-oriented spelling, not a word’s meaning.

Grantha developed in South India to represent Sanskrit sounds that Tamil writing did not have. Early evidence includes a Pallava-period inscription around 295 CE and the Pallankoyil copper plates around 650 CE; another account dates the introduction of these Grantha letters to the 6th–7th centuries.

Why use ஷ instead of ச or ஸ?

It usually reflects a spelling choice.

Tamil writing has also adapted borrowed sounds with Tamil letters. Grantha forms remained especially in Sanskrit-heavy inscriptions and sectarian religious writing. Some Tamil purists reject these additions; other writers retain ஷ in names, religious words, and loanwords. If someone sends you ஷ in a borrowed word, read it as an orthographic choice before calling it wrong.

How does ஷ work in a Tamil word?

It takes vowel signs and joins consonant clusters.

A pulli, the dot-shaped mark, removes the inherent vowel, as in ஷ். Adding the long ā vowel sign makes ஷா. In க்ஷ, ஷ follows க்: together they form a consonant cluster, so ஷ is only its second part.

A source-preserving loanword spelling that can signal Sanskrit-associated or religious writing.

Check the word’s established Tamil spelling before correcting someone; ஷ is not mandatory in every loanword.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ஷ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
