tamil letter ca

Tamil letter ca

17/72

ச is the Tamil letter ca: a consonant with a built-in short a, not a complete word on its own. Vowel signs turn it into syllables, and the pulli cancels that built-in vowel. Its spoken sound depends on its place in a Tamil word.

What ச means

ச is the Tamil ca consonant, with a built-in short a.

The romanization ca names the letter; it is not a full pronunciation guide. Its spoken value changes with its place in a word. A vowel sign adds another vowel to form syllables such as சி or சா; the pulli mark suppresses the built-in vowel, leaving ச்.

Tamil writing developed from Brahmi through Tamil-Brahmi, an early script used to write Tamil. The earliest Tamil-Brahmi evidence is dated to the middle of the third century BCE. Early examples appear on pottery and at cave shelters; a cave inscription records the donation of a hermitage. Grantha developed as a related South Indian script used in Tamil Nadu for Sanskrit, whose consonants traditional Tamil spelling did not always represent. That history explains why Grantha-derived letters can appear inside Tamil text; they remain distinct letters.

Why does a vowel sign appear before ச?

Tamil keeps the consonant first even when its vowel sign draws on the left.

Some Tamil vowel signs are drawn before or around ச even though the written sequence puts them after it. The renderer shapes that sequence into a syllable; a sign on the left does not mean the characters were typed backwards.

Is ச a word by itself?

No: it is a consonant, so by itself it is only a fragment.

A single letter does not reveal a sender's intent. Read the surrounding Tamil word or sentence; with no context, ask what the sender meant.

Neutral in ordinary Tamil spelling; the social tone comes from the surrounding word or sentence.

A message containing only ச cannot reveal the sender's tone.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ச show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
