What ஞ means
The sound is a nasal “ny,” made with the tongue against the palate.
That is one consonant, not a separate n followed by y. A Tamil syllable written with ஞ carries an inherent vowel unless a mark changes or removes it.
The Latin spellings ñ and ny approximate the sound; they are not Tamil letters. The virama in ஞ் suppresses the inherent vowel.
How did ஞ enter Tamil writing?
It belongs to a Tamil writing tradition shaped over centuries.
An early script for Old Tamil, Tamil-Brahmi, is attested from the middle of the third century BCE at the earliest. It adapted Brahmi, an early Indian writing system, to represent Tamil in rock-shelter inscriptions and on pottery.
Tamil, Grantha, and Vatteluttu are connected South Indian script traditions within the broader Brahmic family. That early date is for Tamil-Brahmi, not for the exact modern outline of ஞ.
Why does the vowel mark move left?
Its stored order and its displayed position can differ.
Tamil stores vowel signs after a consonant, but some are drawn on its left or on both sides. The font’s shaping engine arranges the marks into a readable syllable.
So the visible form of ஞ may shift when a vowel sign is added, even though the consonant stays the same.

Questions people ask
1Why does ஞ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
