What વ means
Use Gujarati Phonetic for Latin-key entry or Inscript for direct entry.
Choose the input method that fits your setup: a phonetic method converts Latin-key typing into Gujarati, while Inscript is a Gujarati keyboard layout for direct script entry.
Gujarati consonants carry a built-in short vowel. A vowel sign changes it; the virama mark suppresses it, and the consonant may join the next in a cluster.
Where did Gujarati writing come from?
It grew from a Brahmic writing tradition related to Devanagari.
Gujarati script developed from a Brahmic tradition closely related to Devanagari and was adapted to write the Gujarati language.
The earliest known Gujarati-script manuscript is dated 1592; the script first appeared in print in an advertisement in 1797. Until the 19th century, it served mainly for letters and accounts and was also called the banker’s or merchant’s script.

3Questions people ask
1Why does a Gujarati vowel sign appear before its consonant?
That is normal. Gujarati vowel signs can appear before, above, below, or after their consonant. Shaping determines their visual position, so a sign may appear before the letter it modifies.
