What ब means
ब represents a sound, not a standalone idea. For Hindi ba, the built-in a is a short vowel. Added vowel signs change it: बा is bā, with a long a; बि is bi. A halant, also called a virama, removes the vowel: ब्.
Hindi often leaves the built-in vowel unspoken, especially at word endings: जब ends in b, not ba. Do not automatically apply Hindi pronunciation rules to Sanskrit, Marathi, or Nepali just because they share this script.
Where did ब come from?
It evolved through older Indian writing systems. Its ancestry runs through Brahmi and Gupta scripts. Early Devanagari forms emerged in the 7th century CE; the script matured around the 13th century CE. These dates describe the script, not this exact outline. Used for Sanskrit inscriptions and religious manuscripts, Devanagari also came to write everyday languages.
How do I type ब correctly?
Select a Devanagari keyboard and follow its layout. InScript, Hindi Traditional, and Devanagari-QWERTY use different key maps; check the active layout rather than guessing a Latin shortcut.
Enter ब before its vowel sign, even for बि, whose sign displays on the left. For ब्द, enter ब, then the halant, then द. The font may draw joined consonants as a reduced letter shape or a combined shape called a conjunct.

1What if someone sends just ब?
Ask for context. The letter alone does not tell you whether the sender intended a word fragment, an initial, or a personal shorthand.
