What బ means
Type బ first; add a vowel sign to change its built-in vowel.
A Telugu consonant normally carries an a sound, so బ is read as a syllable like “ba.” In a Telugu layout, add the needed vowel sign after it; for example, బ ూ gives బూ, with a long “u” after b. Halantu (pollu) gives బ్ without the inherent vowel. After halantu, a zero-width non-joiner (ZWNJ)—an invisible formatting character—keeps the next consonant separate; without it, the sequence can form a conjunct, a joined consonant cluster.
Where does the Telugu ba come from?
Telugu writing developed through a shared South Indian script history.
The script descends from Brahmi, an early South Asian writing system, through Kadamba and a period when Telugu and Kannada shared a script before developing separately. The Kalamalla inscription, dated 575 CE, is commonly identified as the earliest full inscription in Telugu.
That inscription is a royal proclamation in the local language rather than Prakrit or Sanskrit. Rounded letterforms suited palm-leaf manuscripts because angular cuts could split the leaf. Telugu script also writes Sanskrit.

1Why does Telugu ba look different in a cluster?
It can. A Telugu conjunct (joined consonant cluster) may show one consonant in a smaller subjoined form, and some clusters vary by font. Use the surrounding consonants to read it.
