What 𑖤 means
It gives a voiced b its short a by default. Siddham consonants keep that vowel unless a vowel sign changes it. A virama, the mark that removes the default vowel, lets consonants join.
Around the 5th century CE, Siddham developed from Gupta writing, part of the older Brahmi family. Later Nāgarī writing also grew within that family. Siddham wrote Sanskrit, including Buddhist texts that traveled east.
As of 2026, the Japanese Buddhist schools Shingon and Tendai preserve Siddham, called Bonji in Japanese, for mantras (ritual phrases), sutras (Buddhist texts) and ceremonies.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𑖤 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
