What 𑖣 means
It represents Sanskrit pha: a p with a puff of air.
In Sanskrit’s series of lip-made consonants, pha follows pa and precedes ba, bha, and ma. English “pin” begins with an aspirated p; “spin” begins with its unaspirated partner.
Siddham is an abugida, a script where consonants carry a built-in vowel. So 𑖣 has a short a unless a vowel mark changes it; a virama cancels that vowel.
How did Siddham travel with Buddhist texts?
Siddham moved east with Sanskrit Buddhist texts.
The wider Siddhamātrikā/Kutila script appears in North Indian inscriptions from the 6th–10th centuries CE. It developed from Gupta writing and later contributed to Śāradā, Proto-Bengali/Gauḍi, and Nāgarī scripts.
Used to write Sanskrit, Siddham traveled through Buddhist transmission to China, Japan, and Korea, where it appears in manuscripts. In Japan, Siddham characters called bonji appear in sutras, mantras, and dharanis; Chinese and Japanese monks also studied the script’s sound order. In a phonetic chart, 𑖣 is pha. Siddham characters can also serve as deity seed signs in ritual objects; the surrounding formula shows whether a sign is being read as a syllable or in that ritual role.
Why does 𑖣 show as a box?
A box usually means the font lacks Siddham coverage.
The character needs a Siddham glyph in the active font. For text with vowel signs, correct display also depends on complex-text shaping: software that positions script marks correctly.
Historical and specialist; its Sanskrit sound and Buddhist manuscript or ritual contexts matter.
It is an aspirated p, not an f; changing it to f changes the consonant.

1Is the square shape a different letter?
No. It is a missing-glyph box: the active font has no Siddham glyph. Text with vowel signs also needs shaping support.
