What ബ means
It is the Malayalam consonant ba, with a default short a.
Malayalam consonants normally carry a short “a” sound. For this letter, a simple Latin-letter spelling is ba. A dependent vowel sign, a small mark attached to the consonant, changes the vowel; the virama, written after it, cancels the vowel and leaves a b sound.
The Vazhappally inscription, an old written record, is ninth-century CE evidence of early Malayalam written in Vatteluttu, with some Grantha characters. Vatteluttu served Malayalam writing, while Grantha supplied forms for Sanskrit vocabulary. Both scripts descended from Brahmi, an older writing system, and contributed to modern Malayalam. Their records served administrative, religious, and literary purposes. A 1971 Kerala script reform simplified some Malayalam forms for print and typing.
Why does Malayalam ba look different?
Font choice changes the drawing, not the letter.
Traditional and reformed Malayalam have some different-looking combination forms. Font choice and the rendering engine also shape vowel signs and consonants around the base letter. Compare the whole syllable before deciding that the base consonant is wrong.

1Why does ബ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
