What ഫ means
Its traditional sound is p with a short puff of air. The letter is called pha; in Latin transliteration, ph marks this breathed p sound. It appears in Sanskrit-derived Malayalam spellings. In everyday speech the puff may fade, and some borrowed words use ഫ for an f sound. Let the word guide you; do not assign the English f sound to every instance.
Malayalam writing has a layered history. The oldest surviving written examples of Malayalam include the Vāḻapaḷḷi plates from the ninth century. Vatteluttu and Grantha are older scripts; both descend from Brahmi, an earlier Indian writing system, but developed separately. Malayalam script drew on both, while Tigalari is another related script descended from Grantha.
This mix of letter forms had a practical purpose: Vatteluttu did not include all the voiced sounds and p-with-a-puff consonants needed for Sanskrit writing, so Grantha forms were brought in and adapted for Malayalam. The script could then spell both inherited Dravidian words and Sanskrit-derived ones.
How do I type ഫ without a Malayalam keyboard?
Use a phonetic Malayalam input method or the fixed InScript layout. Most Malayalam consonants carry a default short a sound. Adding a dependent vowel sign changes it; adding the virama, a mark that cancels that vowel, suppresses it. So ഫ and ഫ് are different letter sequences, not alternate renderings of the same character.
As of 2026, Windows offers Malayalam Phonetic, which lets you type a word in Latin letters and choose a Malayalam suggestion, and Malayalam InScript, a fixed keyboard layout. In a transliteration layout, pha may also produce ഫ. The Kerala orthography reform in 1971 targeted print and typewriting, so older printed combinations may differ from what a modern input method builds.
A neutral consonant inside Malayalam text; the surrounding word supplies the meaning.

1Why does ഫ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
