Devanagari Letter Pa

It represents p with a built-in vowel: pa.

That built-in vowel is called the inherent vowel. Vowel signs change it: पा is pā, with a long a, and पि is pi in Latin transliteration. Read प within the whole word and its language rather than treating it as a standalone word or message.

Its shape evolved through earlier scripts, not a single act of invention. The ancestral Brahmi script appears in inscriptions of Emperor Ashoka from the 3rd century BCE and was used for Prakrit languages and Buddhist texts. Regional forms developed through Gupta and Nagari scripts; Nagari was prominent in northern India by the 10th century. Devanagari continued that writing tradition.

How do I type प?

Use a Devanagari keyboard or a phonetic input method.

On a phonetic keyboard set to your target language, type pa and choose प from the suggestions. INSCRIPT instead assigns characters to fixed keys; Latin pronunciation does not tell you its key positions.

For p without its vowel, enter प followed by the vowel-cancelling mark ्, called virama or halant: प्. To make a consonant cluster, enter the next consonant after that mark.

Why does प change shape?

A consonant cluster can display as a joined form.

Such a joined form is called a conjunct. Your font and text-display software determine whether the sequence appears joined, uses a reduced consonant shape, or retains a visible virama. A different appearance does not necessarily mean different underlying characters.
