What ऽ means
In Sanskrit, it marks a dropped initial a and stays silent. Avagraha (ऽ) marks Sanskrit sandhi, the joining of words: in रामोऽयोध्यां, it marks the initial अ that disappeared when the words fused. The sign adds no sound.
The name is older than this written sign: in Vedic word-by-word recitation, avagraha could name a pause or separation. One catalogue records the mark on the Paiṭhāṇ plates of Govindarāja III, dated 794; older palaeographic references identify the Baroda copper plate of Dhruva, dated 834–35 CE, as the first written attestation. The records do not establish a single agreed earliest date.
Why does avagraha stretch a vowel?
In some languages, it marks a vowel held extra long. Dogri and Maithili use ऽ for an extra-long vowel; Hindi writing can repeat it to stretch a call, as in आईऽऽऽ!. These are duration marks, not Sanskrit's silent dropped-a marker.
Other Brahmic scripts have their own avagraha signs, including Bengali ঽ, Gujarati ઽ, Odia ଽ, Telugu ఽ, Kannada ಽ, and Malayalam ഽ. They are related script forms, not substitutes for Devanagari ऽ.
Why do Sanskrit manuscripts omit avagraha?
Manuscripts and editors follow different conventions. A 2023 discussion of Sanskrit manuscripts reports copies that omit ऽ, use it sparingly, or use it as a separator or reader's aid. Its presence records a text tradition or editorial choice, not another sound.
A 2007 proposal on North Indian accounting signs describes a separate quantity mark for weights and measures that resembles ऽ; it also documents print using avagraha when the proper sign was unavailable. In a measure or ledger-like number, check the notation before reading Sanskrit sandhi into the mark.
An orthographic mark in Sanskrit and other language-specific writing; its reading depends on the text.
Do not read it as “s”: in Sanskrit ऽ is silent; some other uses lengthen a vowel.

1Can I omit avagraha in Sanskrit?
Yes. Some writers and manuscript traditions leave it out; the reader then has to infer the sandhi join.
