What ꣱ means
It guides the melody of Sāmavedic chant, not speech sounds.
The Sāmaveda is one of the Vedas, a collection of sacred hymns; Sāmagāna is its sung recitation. A 2007 proposal to add this sign to Unicode—the shared standard for text characters—describes three readings: atikrama, a skipped tone; vinata, a named melodic pattern; and namana, a bend or sinking in the tune. The notation tradition determines which reading applies. The mark lets written chant show melodic changes, such as skips, prolongations, and modulations, that a singer might otherwise carry orally.
The earliest dated printed example cited for ꣱ is a Devanagari edition of the Sāmaveda from 1871–75; the same discussion also cites manuscripts from the Ranayaniya Sāmaveda tradition. A 2015 Unicode note compares its S-like form in Devanagari, Bengali, and Tulu-Tigalari sources, while identifying Bengali's ordinary avagraha as a different sign.
Is ꣱ the regular Devanagari avagraha or a Vedic mark?
It is a Vedic chant mark; the regular avagraha is ऽ.
In Sanskrit spelling, ऽ marks an initial a elided when sounds meet at a word boundary through sandhi. An inscription dated 834–35 is cited as the earliest known occurrence of the broader avagraha sign; it documents that orthographic tradition, not the first use of ꣱.
Why does ꣱ disappear or move?
Font support and text shaping determine its position.
In text, place ꣱ after the Devanagari syllable it marks; layout should position it above the main character. If a font lacks the sign or the layout engine cannot attach it there, it may appear blank, float, or sit over the wrong part of the syllable.
Specialist chant notation, found in Sāmavedic editions rather than ordinary Devanagari prose.
Do not substitute ऽ: the ordinary mark serves Sanskrit spelling.

Questions people ask
1Why does ꣱ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
