What sound does ओ represent?
In Hindi, ओ is a long, steady o vowel. It is the independent letter used when a syllable begins with that vowel. The O matra, written ो, is a dependent vowel sign attached to a consonant, as in को.
Devanagari also writes Sanskrit, Marathi, Nepali, and other languages, whose pronunciation conventions can differ. In Hindi जाओ, final ओ begins a new written unit after आ.
An ancestor of ओ, the O letter in Brahmi, appears in Ashoka's third-century BCE inscriptions. The form developed through the Gupta and Nāgarī stages; by the eleventh century, Devanagari had become a major script for Sanskrit literature.
