What sound does Sharada 𑆏 represent?

It represents the independent long-o vowel in Sharada.

Sharada developed from Gupta Brahmi through Kutila and became distinct around the 8th century. Its earliest attestation is debated: one account dates a stone inscription at Hund to around 774–775 CE; another treats 9th-century Kashmir coins as the earliest clear examples. In Kashmir, it served as a principal literary and inscriptional script from the 8th century to the 20th century.

Sharada was used for Sanskrit and Kashmiri in Kashmir and the northwestern region, in inscriptions, on coins and in manuscripts. The earliest manuscript evidence is assigned to the 12th century, including the Bakhshali mathematical manuscript, a Sanskrit treatise; birch-bark manuscripts from the 14th and 16th centuries show later development. Sharada is historically connected with Takri, Landa and Gurmukhi; Devanagari shares the broader Brahmic structure but has different letterforms. In the 19th century, Persian-Arabic writing and Devanagari reduced its everyday role. Its use is limited as of 2026, including Kashmiri Pandit ritual writing such as horoscopes.

Is 𑆏 the Sharada OM sign?

No. 𑆏 alone is the long-o vowel letter.

Unicode recommends 𑆏𑆀 for Sharada OM: the letter followed by candrabindu. The sequence represents OM; 𑆏 by itself remains a vowel letter.
