Gujarati letter O

It is the independent letter for Gujarati’s o vowel. Gujarati consonants normally carry a built-in vowel. When a syllable starts with o and has no consonant in front, use ઓ; after a consonant, an attached vowel sign writes the same sound: ક + ો makes કો.

Where did the Gujarati script develop?

Gujarati grew from a cursive form of Nagari writing.

Gujarati-language inscriptions from the 15th century used Nagari, the writing tradition from which Gujarati developed; a distinct Gujarati script became widespread by the middle of the 19th century. Its cursive form suited quick entries in account books and personal letters, where writers left off the horizontal line found across many Devanagari letters.

Devanagari ओ is the corresponding independent o vowel in a related script tradition. Gujarati and Devanagari developed from Nagari, but their letters are distinct and cannot be substituted for each other.
