What ઐ means
It is the standalone letter for Gujarati’s ai vowel.
Gujarati teaching describes its sound as a blend of the vowel sounds in અ and ઇ. The script developed from a Nagari-related tradition. Old Gujarati was literary by the 12th century; a commentary on the Jain teaching text Upadeśamālā is dated 1487.
At a word or syllable start, write ઐ; after a consonant, use the dependent sign ૈ, as in કૈ. Phonetic input maps ai to ઐ; InScript has an independent-vowel key. Unicode encodes one letter, not અ ૈ.

1Why does ઐ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
