gujarati vowel candra e

Gujarati Vowel Candra E

ઍ is Gujarati’s independent candra-e letter, used to keep a short open vowel distinct in borrowed spellings. It contrasts with ordinary એ; after a consonant, Gujarati writes the same vowel with the dependent sign ૅ.

What ઍ means

It marks a short vowel like the “a” in English cat. At the start of a vowel-led syllable, ઍ is the independent letter; after a consonant, Gujarati uses the dependent sign ૅ, as in કૅ. Ordinary એ marks a different vowel. English comparisons vary: some descriptions place the sound closer to the “e” in bet, so treat those words as rough guides.

The Gujarati candra e reflects a vowel distinction that developed gradually. One account dates the open-e and open-o contrasts of Middle Gujarati to 1500–1800. An 1847 Gujarati grammar records ઍ, criticizes its form, and recommends dropping it; later guidance uses candra vowels to represent sounds in English-derived words.

Gujarati and Devanagari are historically related scripts. Devanagari has its own candra-e letter, ऍ, a separate character in a different script.

How do I type the Gujarati candra e?

Use standalone ઍ for a vowel without a host consonant.

Use the atomic letter ઍ rather than rebuilding it as અ + ૅ. Unicode recommends the single character; the analyzed sequence can create search or normalization mismatches. The dependent sign follows its consonant in text order, while a Gujarati font places it where it belongs visually.

Gujarati InScript has a dedicated ઍ entry. Phonetic keyboards may map plain e to એ; choose candra e from suggestions when offered. The key position varies by layout.

What does it mean when someone sends ઍ?

A lone ઍ gives you a vowel letter, not the sender’s intent.

By itself, ઍ does not identify a complete Gujarati word. Ask what word or text it belongs to; inside a word, it marks the writer’s vowel choice.

In a Gujarati word, it marks a specific short vowel; alone, it is still a letter, so context decides what the message says.

If someone sends only ઍ, ask what word or text it belongs to.

Why does ઍ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
