Use ए when the syllable starts with the vowel. After a consonant, use the attached vowel mark े instead: के is written ke in Latin letters.

ए belongs to an evolving writing tradition. Its script ancestry reaches back to Brahmi, used in Emperor Ashoka's inscriptions in the 3rd century BCE. Through Gupta and Nagari writing styles, early Devanagari forms emerged around the 7th century CE, serving Sanskrit manuscripts and later other languages.
