What 𑐊 means
Use 𑐊 for e at the start of a syllable. In Newa, also called Prachalit, this is the independent vowel form; after a consonant, the same vowel takes the dependent sign 𑐾.
A single 𑐊 is a letter sample or part of Newa writing. Its form tells you where the vowel sits in the syllable.
How old is the Newa script?
Written evidence for Newa script reaches at least the tenth century. Newa developed from Brahmi, an older South Asian writing system, and appears in inscriptions, coins, manuscripts, and books.
It served mainly to write Nepal Bhasa and was also used for Sanskrit and other regional languages. After Newa dynasties fell in the late eighteenth century, script use declined; it was banned in 1905, and the ban ended in 1951.
How is Newa connected to Devanagari and Ranjana?
Newa is related to Devanagari and historically connected with Ranjana.
Newa belongs to the Nepal-Lipi tradition, a wider group of scripts used in Nepal. Ranjana and Bhujimol are distinct scripts in that history; their characters cannot replace Newa letters.
Neutral as writing; by itself, 𑐊 identifies Newa script rather than a social tone.
After a consonant, use the dependent sign 𑐾, not the independent letter 𑐊.
Drift: As of 2026, Newa-script revival includes teaching, digital promotion, and manuscript transcription. Reports also describe younger Newa readers who recognize the forms but may not be able to read them technically.
