What এ means
এ represents a vowel sound, not a fixed English translation. The Bangla e can sound roughly like the vowel in English “eight” or “at”: /e/ or /æ/ in pronunciation notation. Read the whole word rather than assuming the English letter-name.
How do I type এ?
Select a Bengali keyboard, or use the palette. On a fixed keyboard layout, find the independent vowel এ; its key position depends on the layout.
The e-kar has a display trap: ে is stored after its consonant but drawn to its left. That visual order is expected; don't reverse the characters to “fix” it.
How did this letter develop?
It evolved as part of Bengali writing. The script descends from Brahmi, an ancient Indian writing system. Its precursor, Proto-Bangla, appears in inscriptions from the 9th and 10th centuries and developed into Bangla during the 11th and 12th centuries.
A copper plate inscribed in the Sundarban region in 1196 shows largely developed Bengali writing. Printing helped fix letter shapes in 1778. These are milestones for the script, not an invention date for এ.

Questions people ask
1Why does এ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
