What গ means
It writes the voiced g consonant in Bangla words. Its sound is like the g in English “garden,” rather than the g in “gem.”
Bangla consonants normally carry an inherent, or built-in, vowel. A vowel sign changes that vowel; hasant (্) suppresses it and can join consonants into a conjunct. Read গ as part of its word.
Where did Bengali গ come from?
It developed gradually with the Bengali script. Its lineage passes through older scripts including Brahmi, Gupta and Siddhamatrika/Kutila. Brahmi appears in Emperor Ashoka’s inscriptions from the 3rd century BCE.
Proto-Bangla forms appear in the 9th and 10th centuries, with developed Bangla forms in the 11th and 12th centuries. Complete alphabetic forms appear in 13th-century manuscripts. These dates trace the script, not the first exact form of গ. Earlier writing served literature and official records, including land grants.
Bangla script has also been used for Assamese, with additional letters; Bengali writing traditions have included Perso-Arabic and Sylheti Nagri in some periods. Printing helped standardize Bangla letterforms, with stereotyped Bangla print dated to 1778.
Why does গ look different?
Vowel signs and consonant joins change its displayed form. A vowel sign follows গ in the written sequence but may appear before, after, below or around it. Hasant can join consonants, and the font shapes that conjunct.
