What শ means
It belongs to a writing tradition that developed over centuries. Evidence for writing in Bengal includes the Mahasthan Brahmi inscription. The script lineage later passes through Gupta, Siddhamātrikā or Kuṭila, and Proto-Bengali or Gauḍi forms toward modern Bengali. Older forms of the palatal Śa included transitional and looped outlines; its modern shape was still developing by the twelfth century.
Why do শ, ষ and স sound alike?
In standard Bengali, all three often sound like “sh.” Their spellings preserve distinctions inherited from Sanskrit, an older South Asian language, even where speech has merged much of the sound contrast. Some West and North Bengal speakers also do not consistently distinguish “s” from “sh.” Use the spelling of the word: a matching sound does not make these letters interchangeable.
How do I type শ?
Use a Bengali input method such as Avro or Bijoy. Avro's phonetic mode turns Latin-letter spellings into Bengali; Bijoy assigns letters to fixed key positions. The typing entries below give the specific mappings.
A neutral Bengali consonant whose role is inside a word.
Do not swap শ, ষ and স by sound; Bengali spelling keeps them distinct.

Questions people ask
1Why does Bijoy text look broken?
A font mismatch can cause it. As of 2026, legacy Bijoy text may need a compatible Bijoy font. Unicode text avoids that legacy dependency, though it still needs a font that supports Bengali.
