bengali letter pha

Bengali letter Pha

38/96

On an English keyboard, Avro Phonetic accepts ph or f to type Bengali ফ. In Bangla, the letter usually represents a p sound with a puff of air, though some Bengali varieties pronounce it closer to f. Its vowel signs and virama also change how it joins a syllable.

What ফ means

In Avro Phonetic, type ph or f. Both spellings produce ফ. To keep two consonants separate, put Avro’s accent key between them; otherwise the input method may form a conjunct.

What sound does ফ make?

It is usually an aspirated p, with an inherent vowel in bare form. Aspiration means a small puff of air follows the p. A bare ফ carries Bangla’s default ô-like vowel; a vowel sign changes that vowel, while a virama removes it so the consonant can join another.

The letter’s shape developed over time with the Bengali script. That script descends from eastern Brahmi, attested in Bengal by the Mahasthan inscription, and passed through Kutila and Proto-Bengali stages. A palaeographic study traces Pha from the Kamauli grant through a cursive Torpondighi form; the angular Bengali form was fully developed in the 11th century. The script appears in inscriptions, copper-plate grants, literature, and religious manuscripts.

Why does ফ sometimes sound like f?

Pronunciation varies across Bengali speech. Some descriptions give an aspirated [pʰ] for western-central varieties and an f-like [ɸ] or [f] for eastern varieties. These are regional pronunciations of the same letter, not different spellings.

A nukta-marked form, ফ়, appears sporadically in spellings of Persian-Arabic loanwords to indicate an f-like sound. The 2020 ICANN Bangla-script proposal describes this practice as absent from ordinary printed Bangla. Plain ফ can already sound f-like in some varieties.

An ordinary Bangla letter; an f-like pronunciation can reflect regional speech.

An f-like pronunciation is not automatically a mistake.

Why does my Bengali font join ফ to another letter?

A conjunct is being formed. A virama removes the inherent vowel, and the font may combine or stack the consonants.
