What র means
Use r with Avro Phonetic enabled.
Avro Phonetic converts Latin-key input into Bangla text. Its documented mappings as of 2026-09-05 also produce repha (or reph), the upper r form, and ra-phala, the lower attached form; see How to type.
What does র mean?
It represents the r consonant in Bengali, also called Bangla.
A consonant normally includes a vowel sound: a vowel sign changes it, while the hasant suppresses it. র evolved with the Bengali script from eastern descendants of Brahmi, an ancient Indian writing system; it shares ancestry with Devanagari ra.
Why does র change shape?
Joined letters show whether r comes first or last.
A consonant cluster joins consonants without an intervening vowel. র + ্ + ক produces র্ক, with repha above; ক + ্ + র produces ক্র, with ra-phala attached low. Enter the letters in reading order, not visual position.
Incomplete Bengali font or text-shaping support may display a reduced letter form or a visible hasant instead of the joined shape.
