Gujarati Letter Ra

Alone, it reads r with a short built-in vowel.

A vowel sign swaps that vowel for another; the virama cancels it entirely, leaving a bare consonant — and that same virama is what lets ર fuse with neighbouring consonants into a cluster.

The script itself grew from a cursive branch of Nagari — the older regional script Gujarati-language inscriptions still used in the 15th century — and counts Kaithi among its relatives. The earliest known document in recognisably Gujarati writing is dated 1592. Until the 19th century it served mainly bookkeeping and personal letters; printing pushed it into schools, books and newspapers. The dropped top line is the ink-trace of that cursive past.

Why does Gujarati ર change shape in words?

Cluster position decides between reph and rakaar.

Start a cluster with ર and it appears as reph, a small stroke above the base consonant — as in ર્ક. Put ર after another consonant and it appears as a rakaar stroke beneath — as in ક્ર and ત્ર. Same letter, different costume.

The stored characters keep their logical order even when the visible marks move; without Gujarati shaping support, an app can split the cluster into separate letters, scramble the order, or drop marks in the wrong place.
