Gujarati Letter Ya

43/91

ય is Gujarati’s consonant for the y sound, usually carrying an a-like vowel. In words, vowel signs and consonant clusters affect how it is read and drawn. Its script grew from Nagari, once used for practical records before wider manuscript and religious use.

What ય means

It marks Gujarati’s consonant with a y sound. Gujarati ya pronunciation is close to the y in “yes.” Gujarati consonants usually carry an inherent a-like vowel, so ય alone forms roughly “ya”; a vowel sign changes that vowel, while a virama suppresses it. In a word, ય marks a sound rather than a complete word.

Gujarati ya and Devanagari य are historically related letters. Gujarati writing developed from Nagari, within the wider Brahmic family of South Asian scripts; the Gujarati form lacks the top headline seen in Devanagari, and both forms trace back to Brahmi ya. The earliest known Old Gujarati document is a handwritten Adi Parva manuscript dated 1591–92; Gujarati first appears in print in an advertisement in 1797.

Until the 19th century, Gujarati writing was used mainly for letters and accounts and was called the banker’s, merchant’s, or trader’s script. It later also carried manuscripts and Jain religious texts, alongside Gujarati translations of Parsi religious works.

Why does Gujarati ya change shape?

A virama joins it to the preceding consonant. A Gujarati virama suppresses the preceding consonant’s built-in vowel: ત્ + ય → ત્ય is a documented consonant conjunct, roughly a t sound followed by ય’s y sound. It is a normal cluster, not a second form of ય.

Fonts may show the cluster as a half-form, a ligature, or a visible virama if shaping support differs. Gujarati vowel signs are stored after their consonant even when a sign is drawn before, above, or below it, so display position does not always follow text order.
