What ଯ means
It has a j-like sound in standard Odia. Romanization writes it as ya, which does not predict its usual modern sound. The separate letter ୟ represents the y-like sound.
When did the Odia letter ya develop?
It took shape with the script over centuries. Odia writing developed from Brahmi through regional forms, including Kalinga. The earliest complete surviving inscription in Odia, a copper-plate record from Urajam, is dated 1051. Accounts describe its script as Kalinga or Southern Nagari; that date marks the record, not this letter’s first appearance.
Why is the Odia script rounded? A common explanation is palm-leaf writing: long straight cuts made with a stylus could split a leaf. The Brahmi letter 𑀬 is the historical counterpart of ଯ; their written forms and modern sounds changed as the script developed.
How do I type ଯ?
On Odia InScript, press Shift/ for ଯ. As of 2026, the documented layout puts ଯ on the question-mark key; / types ୟ.
An Odia consonant normally carries an unwritten vowel. The halanta (virama) sign suppresses it when consonants join into a cluster. Some joined forms are called y-phala, where ya joins a preceding consonant. As documented in 2026, MediaWiki Lekhani’s example may display incorrectly without an invisible zero-width joiner.
Neutral as a letter: the surrounding Odia word or sentence supplies the tone.
The romanized name ya is not a pronunciation guide; this letter usually has a j-like sound in Odia.
