chakma letter raa

Chakma Letter Raa

35/71

𑄢 is the Chakma letter for the consonant r, used to spell words rather than to stand for a word itself. Chakma spelling gives consonants an unwritten default vowel, which other signs can change or suppress. The letter appears in older herbal and Buddhist manuscripts as well as modern digital input tools.

What 𑄢 means

It marks r, with an inherent vowel unless spelling changes it. Chakma is an abugida: each consonant begins with an unwritten default vowel, which other marks can change or remove.

The letter contributes a sound inside a Chakma spelling; it does not carry a separate word meaning.

What is known about Chakma script history?

Chakma is part of the Brahmic script family. Brahmic scripts are used across South and Southeast Asia. The Chakma Autonomous District Council reports no written historical references to the Chakma people before the 10th century.

In traditional manuscript practice, village medicine men called Boidyos used the script for Chakma medicinal manuscripts about plants, herbs, and roots. Chakma Buddhist manuscripts also contain religious writing, including Agartara, sutras, mantras, and ritual texts.

Descriptions compare Chakma script with Myanmar, Khmer, and Lanna scripts; these are structural or visual similarities, not evidence that Raa descends from any one of them. The Translation Commons project has provided desktop and mobile Chakma input tools.

How does Raa form a Chakma conjunct?

It can take a vowel sign or join another consonant. In Chakma spelling, vowel signs modify a consonant’s default syllable; a conjunct is a stacked consonant cluster.

A 2001 orthographic reform recommended a standard set of conjuncts that includes Raa.

This is ordinary Chakma writing; without the surrounding letters, its spelling role may be unclear.

Why does 𑄢 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
