ঢ is the Bangla letter for a voiced d-like sound made with the tongue curled back and a puff of air. It is used to spell Bangla words; it differs from ধ, made against the upper teeth, and ড, which has no following puff of air. Its shape comes through the eastern branch of the Brahmi script family.

Text symbol

What ঢ means

A breathy, voiced d-like sound with the tongue curled back.

The tongue tip bends back, and a puff of air follows the sound. In phonetics, that puff is called aspiration. ধ is made with the tongue against the upper teeth; ড uses the curled-back tongue but has no puff of air.

In Bangla writing, a bare consonant carries an inherent vowel unless a vowel sign changes it. A hasant, a mark that cancels this built-in vowel, lets ঢ join a following consonant.

Where did ঢ come from?

It developed through the eastern branch of the Brahmi script family.

Brahmi was an early writing system; its earliest decipherable inscriptions are Ashoka's edicts, public orders from the third century BCE. The northern line passed through Gupta and Siddhamatrika scripts. In Bengal, its eastern line developed into Proto-Bengali, also called Gaudi, in the eighth century CE; by the eleventh and twelfth centuries CE it was described as Bengali script.

This script family first recorded languages such as Prakrit and Sanskrit; later descendants were adapted to regional languages such as Bangla. Devanagari is another related branch, while ঢ follows the eastern route into Bangla writing.

Does ঢ belong only to Bengali?

No; this script is shared by Bangla, Assamese, and other languages.

The shared script does not give ঢ a separate message meaning. It marks a consonant; the surrounding language determines the word and its exact pronunciation.

Bangla writing retains letter distinctions from a Sanskrit-based alphabet even where spoken forms vary. Read ঢ as part of a word's spelling, with the language guiding how it sounds.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ঢ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
