What 𑀰 means
A 'sh' sound — śa, carrying a built-in 'a'.
English 'sh' is the closest everyday match; scholars write it śa, Unicode calls it SHA — both spellings circulate. Brahmi's rule gives every consonant a built-in 'a': vowel signs swap it, virama cancels it so consonants fuse into clusters. Read the marks around it first.
Where does 𑀰 come from?
Origin unsettled; first records are carved in stone.
No inventor survives. The early corpus is Ashoka's third-century BCE edicts: Prakrit proclamations carved where the public would read them. A Cambridge study dates the earliest Brahmi to sherds at Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, from the beginning of the fourth century BCE — a claim about attestation, not invention.
It went on to write Sanskrit and early Tamil; regional descendants became scripts such as Devanagari and Tamil, with Kharoshthi a parallel script in the northwest. 𑀰 is the ancestor-era sign.
Why does 𑀰 look different across fonts?
One letter, many historical styles — fonts pick the drawing.
Unicode encodes one Brahmi sha and leaves regional drawing styles to fonts. Two Brahmi fonts may draw 𑀰 differently, a virama cluster may stack vertically, and a font without coverage shows a box — same character either way.

2Worth knowing
- Forgotten for over a millennium, Brahmi was re-deciphered in the 1830s by James Prinsep — Ashoka's inscriptions, where 𑀰 appears, were central.
Questions people ask
2Why does 𑀰 show up as an empty box?
A font gap, almost always. Brahmi was encoded in 2010, so older or minimal fonts lack it; a Brahmi-capable font fixes the same text.
Does 𑀰 have a capital form?
No. Brahmi never developed capitals or lowercase — inscriptions write the same letter in every position.
