Brahmi Letter Ssa

50/115

𑀱 is the Brahmi letter for Sanskrit's retroflex sibilant ṣa — an 'sh' with the tongue curled back — and normally carries an inherent 'a'. Expect it in ancient Indian inscriptions and manuscripts. One wrinkle: Early Prakrit writing often merged Sanskrit's three sibilants, so a text may not show the ṣa a transliteration suggests.

What 𑀱 means

𑀱 is a consonant letter for the Sanskrit sibilant ṣa.

Brahmi is an abugida — each consonant letter carries a built-in 'a' until a vowel sign replaces it or a virama cancels it.

Sanskrit kept three s-sounds in three letters — palatal śa, retroflex ṣa, dental sa. Early Prakrit inscriptions often collapsed them; check a text's language before trusting a ṣa.

Where did Brahmi ssa come from?

It belongs to Brahmi, the script of Ashoka's third-century BCE edicts.

Those edicts are proclamations the emperor Ashoka had carved on rocks and pillars across India — South Asia's oldest large body of writing. Brahmi went on to write Prakrit, Sanskrit, Tamil and more.

How the alphabet began is still argued — Aramaic influence is a leading proposal. Its afterlife is clearer: early geometric forms shaded into Gupta-period styles, then into the scripts of South and Southeast Asia; Devanagari's ष continues the line.

Why does Brahmi text stack?

Consonant virama consonant is written as one stacked conjunct.

Encode a cluster as 𑀱 virama 𑁆 the next consonant; the shaper stacks the second letter under the first or fuses a ligature. A cluster printing separately usually means the font lacks conjuncts.

Scholarly and epigraphic — inscriptions, transliteration, or deliberate ancient-script reference.

Don't use it where modern Devanagari ष belongs — same sound, different script.

Worth knowing

  • Brahmi stopped being read well over a thousand years ago; James Prinsep cracked it in 1837, and Ashoka's edicts — this letter included — became legible again.

Questions people ask

2

Why is my Brahmi cluster not joining?

Usually the font. Clusters need consonant virama consonant plus shaping support; correct characters still print separately without conjunct forms.

Why does 𑀱 show as an empty box?

No Brahmi font installed. The letter sits outside the basic character set; a font like Noto Sans Brahmi turns the box into the glyph.

Why is 𑀱 a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
