What ગ means
ગ represents the Gujarati consonant g with its built-in vowel. In transliteration, the syllable is usually written “ga”; vowel signs change that vowel, and the virama mark removes it.
The Windows Gujarati INSCRIPT layout maps ગ to i; Microsoft’s mapping and Gujarati Phonetic guidance are dated 2024-06-20. Gujarati Phonetic accepts a word’s Latin transliteration and offers Gujarati suggestions.
How did this Gujarati letter get its shape?
ગ evolved with the Gujarati script, which developed from Nagari writing. The Nagari tradition belongs to the older Brahmi-derived script family; Gujarati was adapted to write the Gujarati language.
The earliest known document in Old Gujarati is a manuscript of Adi Parva, a section of the Mahabharata, dated 1591–92.
Gujarati writing later dropped the continuous headline seen in Devanagari. A historical account links the more open, cursive style to bookkeepers’ need to write daily accounts faster. Jain patrons later supported the script by hiring writers to copy religious texts. Parsi writers also used Gujarati for religious and literary works.
Neutral as a letter; the Gujarati word or sentence gives it its meaning and tone.

1Questions people ask
2Why can ગ change shape in a word?
It can. In a consonant cluster, a font may use a joined form or a half form, so ગ can look unlike its isolated shape.
Why does a vowel mark appear before ગ?
It is a display rule: Gujarati stores the vowel mark after the consonant, but shaping can place some marks before the base letter.
