Gujarati letter Ka

18/91

To type Gujarati ka ક, choose a Gujarati phonetic layout and enter k; InScript uses fixed Gujarati key positions. In Gujarati, ક represents the unaspirated k sound, like the k in “skin,” and has a built-in weak vowel, so it sounds roughly like “kuh” by itself. The i vowel sign is entered after ક but can appear on its left.

What ક means

Use a Gujarati phonetic layout and enter k for ક. A phonetic keyboard maps Latin keys to Gujarati sounds; an InScript keyboard uses fixed Gujarati key positions. Adding a after k may produce કા, with an added vowel, so choose the form that fits the word.

To enter a consonant cluster, put Gujarati’s virama, the mark ્, after ક and then enter the next consonant. A phonetic keyboard may join them automatically.

What does ક mean in Gujarati?

It represents an unaspirated k sound with a built-in vowel. The k is like the one in “skin,” made without an extra puff of air. By itself, ક also has a short, neutral vowel, roughly like the “uh” in “sofa.” A vowel sign changes that vowel; the virama ્ suppresses it so the consonant can stand alone or join a cluster.

The Gujarati script evolved within the Brahmic tradition, a family of scripts used across South Asia, through earlier forms including Gupta, Siddham, and Nagari. It is closely related to Devanagari, but Gujarati has no continuous horizontal line across the tops of letters. For a long time, Gujarati script was used mainly for correspondence and accounts, while Devanagari carried much literary and academic writing until the 19th century. Its documented record includes a manuscript dated 1592; its first appearance in print was a 1797 advertisement. Those dates concern the script, not ક’s first use.

In the late 19th century, extra Gujarati marks were devised to represent Arabic words in Gujarati script. Ismaili Khoja communities used them in manuscripts and print; ક kept its consonant role.

Why does ક change shape next to other letters?

Other letters and marks change how it appears. Gujarati stores the i vowel sign after ક, but shaping can draw it on the left. With ્, ક may join a following consonant; if a font lacks that joined form, the virama can remain visible. Some Gujarati conjuncts use a Devanagari-shaped component without changing the underlying text.

Neutral and functional: it writes a Gujarati consonant and has no social tone on its own.

2

Why does the i mark in કિ appear before the consonant?

The display places it on the left. Gujarati stores the vowel sign after ક in the text sequence, then shaping draws it before the consonant.

Why is the virama sometimes visible?

A font may not have a joined form for that consonant cluster. Then ્ stays visible between the consonants.
