Sharada Letter Ka

18/96

𑆑 is the Sharada letter ka; alone it reads as the syllable ka because a built-in short a follows the consonant. Sharada was used for Sanskrit, Kashmiri, and other languages of northern South Asia. Vowel signs change its vowel, and font shaping affects its appearance on screen.

What 𑆑 means

𑆑 is the Sharada consonant ka.

On its own it carries a built-in short “a,” so it reads as the syllable ka. A vowel sign changes that vowel; a virama suppresses it and may join the consonant to the next letter. It is a syllable-building letter, not a word by itself.

When did Sharada ka first appear?

Sharada appears by the 8th century; the earliest record is disputed.

Sharada developed in a northwestern branch of the Brahmi script family, an older South Asian writing tradition. Some specialists date the stone inscription at Hund to 774–775; other readings place its forms later. Coins from the 9th–10th centuries are another early record. The earliest known manuscript is the Bakhshali treatise, a mathematical manuscript from the 12th century.

Sharada served inscriptional and literary writing in Sanskrit, Kashmiri, and other languages across northern South Asia, especially in Kashmir and nearby regions including Gilgit, Ladakh, Jammu, and Himachal Pradesh. Devāśeṣa replaced it in parts of the region in the 13th century and later gave rise to Takri. By the 19th century, Arabic-script Kashmiri and expanding Devanagari use had marginalized Sharada. As of 2025, Kashmiri Pandits retain limited use for horoscopes and rituals.

Why does Sharada ka render differently?

Fonts and apps control how Sharada’s strokes join.

Sharada’s headstrokes can connect across letters depending on the font. Vowel signs are entered after their consonant even when displayed elsewhere; a virama removes the inherent vowel and may form a conjunct, a combined consonant form.

If 𑆑 appears as a box or letters overlap, the font or app may lack glyph or shaping support. Microsoft’s Windows guidance says a suitable third-party OpenType font can shape Sharada, though some apps may still fail.

No. Sharada was used to write Sanskrit, Kashmiri, and other languages, so this letter alone cannot tell you which language a passage uses.
