What 𑀕 means
It is a hard g, like in “go,” plus a short “a.”
Brahmi is an abugida, a writing system where consonants carry a default vowel. A vowel sign changes it; the virama removes it.
Brahmi’s later forms shaped regional scripts
Early records used Prakrit, a group of ancient South Asian languages. Later Brahmi texts also wrote Sanskrit, a classical South Asian language, and regional languages.
Regional forms shaped northern Gupta and Siddham and southern Tamil, Grantha, Kannada, Telugu, and Sinhala script traditions. Kharosthi was a separate northwestern script with roots in Aramaic, an older Middle Eastern writing system.
