What 𑀔 means
Brahmi consonants carry a short vowel even when none is written.
A vowel sign changes that built-in a; a virama mark cancels it.
How did Brahmi reach other scripts?
Later regional forms gave rise to scripts such as Devanagari and Tamil.
Brahmi’s origin is debated: proposals link it to West Asian writing or local marks on South Asian pottery and rock. It was adapted for Tamil, a South Indian language, and for Iranian and now-extinct Tocharian languages in Central Asia. Kharoṣṭhī was a separate northwest script.

1Why does 𑀔 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
