What ꠄ means
Use Unicode input or a Syloti Nagri keyboard. ꠄ is the independent E vowel in Sylheti spelling; after a consonant, its dependent form is ꠦ.
A dedicated layout suits whole Sylheti words, while an operating system's Unicode-entry sequence works for an occasional letter. Either method still needs a font that supports Syloti Nagri.
Where did the Syloti Nagri script come from?
Syloti Nagri's exact origin is disputed; the script was developed for Sylheti. It derives from Brahmi. Accounts link its arrival in Sylhet variously to followers of Shah Jalal, North Indian Brahmins, Afghan rulers, or Bihari soldiers. Kaithi is the closest proposed comparison, but specialists differ on whether the two should be treated as one script or as distinct scripts.
It was used for puthi, traditional booklets, and everyday writing. The earliest Syloti Nagri manuscripts are disputed: one collection gives 1549, another account gives 1774, and a fifteenth century attribution survives only in nineteenth century copies. Abdul Karim's woodblock type appeared around 1870, followed by presses in several regional centres. Printing later declined, and the presses had closed by the early 1970s. As of 2026, revival projects use fonts, primers, and keyboard resources.
ꠄ appears in Sylheti text written with the Syloti Nagri script.
Without a font that supports Syloti Nagri, a recipient may see a blank box instead of the letter.

2Questions people ask
2Why can ꠄ sound different from English E?
It can vary. ꠄ represents a Sylheti vowel, and its pronunciation changes with its position in a word; English E is only an approximation.
Why does ꠄ look different in different fonts?
Manuscript, woodblock, and digital type styles draw Syloti Nagri differently. A horizontal top line is not required.
