Kaithi letter e

10/66

The Kaithi e, 𑂉, is an independent vowel letter. Alone, it gives the vowel but no surrounding word. Kaithi script served North Indian records and trade, correspondence, and religious or literary writing.

Text symbol

What 𑂉 means

It writes the vowel e on its own. The e sign 𑂵 attaches to a consonant instead.

A copperplate inscription linked to a ruler active around 1090 may be an early witness. Bihar officially backed Kaithi in the late nineteenth century; Devanagari rose as Kaithi declined in the early twentieth century. Kaithi relates to Devanagari and Gujarati scripts and is considered a source of Mahajani, a merchant script, and Syloti Nagri, used for Sylheti; these ties are not a one-way family tree.

A blank box can signal missing Kaithi font support; the text may still contain 𑂉.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𑂉 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Kaithi block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
