What 𑂈 means
It writes Kaithi’s long u as an independent vowel. Use 𑂈 when that vowel begins a syllable or stands alone. After a consonant, Kaithi attaches a dependent vowel sign to the consonant instead.
Kaithi’s exact origin is unsettled. A copper-plate land grant associated with Chandradeva around 1090 may be earlier evidence, but its identification as Kaithi is tentative. More secure evidence places Kaithi administrative use from at least the 16th century.
Kaithi was an Indian script used across parts of North India for administration and trade, personal correspondence and records, and religious and literary writing. Government standardization followed in 1875, and Bihar made Kaithi official in courts and administrative offices in 1880. By the early 20th century, Devanagari had become the stronger formal alternative. Migrants carried Kaithi to Mauritius and Trinidad, where families preserved records and devotional manuscripts.
What does 𑂈 mean when someone sends it?
Alone, it gives no reliable emotional cue. It is a letter, so a one-character message is best read as a Kaithi fragment unless the surrounding conversation suggests otherwise. It could be a quoted character, a typing test, a lesson, or a stray piece of a word. Someone who reads Kaithi can identify the vowel; others need the surrounding text.
Kaithi is part of a regional writing history also involving Devanagari, Gujarati, Mahajani, and Syloti Nagri; the direction of influence is not simple.
Why does 𑂈 look different in handwriting?
Handwriting may blur short u and long u. Kaithi’s presentation styles are associated with Bhojpuri, Magahi, and Maithili writing; the representative chart glyph follows the Magahi style. Printed forms distinguish short and long u, while handwritten sources have a documented tendency to use the long form for both. That can make 𑂇 and 𑂈 harder to tell apart in handwriting.
If 𑂈 displays as a box, your font or text-rendering setup cannot show this Kaithi letter; the underlying character remains the same.
Historical, administrative, or language-study context; in casual chat it reads like a fragment of Kaithi text.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𑂈 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
