What ଏ means
In Odia phonetic input, type e and choose ଏ.
This is the independent Odia e vowel, used at the start of a syllable.
how is ଏ different from େ?
ଏ stands alone; େ attaches to a consonant.
Both forms write the same vowel, but only ଏ is an independent letter. The mark େ is a dependent vowel sign, or matra: it is written with a consonant when that syllable uses the e vowel.
The sign େ is stored after its consonant but rendered on the left. In କେ, the consonant is read with the e vowel, even though the mark appears before it.
why is Odia script round?
Odia’s rounded forms are linked to palm-leaf writing.
The Odia script descends from Brahmi, an ancient writing system, through regional forms associated with Siddham and Gaudi. Its documented relatives include Bengali–Assamese and other Indic scripts. The earliest complete Odia inscription is the Urajam inscription, dated 1051 CE.
Odia writing appears on inscriptions and copper plates as well as palm-leaf manuscripts; curves are commonly linked to palm leaves because straight cuts could split them. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the script’s distinctiveness also featured in arguments for Odia language status and regional solidarity.
Neutral orthography: surrounding words supply the tone.
After a consonant, use େ; standalone ଏ begins the vowel syllable.
