What 𑊶 means

Use a Khudawadi keyboard or your editor’s Unicode input method.

𑊶 is an independent vowel letter, so enter this single character rather than combining Khudawadi A with the dependent E sign. The encoding proposal recommends the independent form. Select a Khudawadi layout when your system offers one.

What does 𑊶 mean?

It is Khudawadi’s independent E vowel.

Within Khudawadi writing, it supplies the E vowel in a Sindhi word. By itself it is only a letter, not a complete word; the surrounding text determines the word. Khudawadi is written from left to right.

Why did Khudawadi reach schools?

Merchant writing became a written standard for schools and administration.

Landa varieties emerged in northwestern South Asia in the sixteenth century. Khudawadi was used for Sindhi merchant records, accounts, and other business. Some Landa writing omitted vowels in commercial notes, keeping them compact but harder for people outside the trade to read.

Khudabad’s form became a quasi-standard in the eighteenth century. In the 1860s, education official Narayan Jagannath Vaidya developed an official version using some characters from the Shikarpur form; the Bombay government published it in 1868 for education and administration. Khudawadi also appeared in books and court records before an Arabic-based Sindhi standard displaced it in the late nineteenth century. Khudawadi is Landa-based and related to Sharada. Other Landa scripts took distinct paths: Gurmukhi became associated with Sikh sacred writing, and Khojki served Nizari Ismaili religious literature.

A specialist script letter: inside a word it carries a vowel, while alone it cannot be translated as a word.

Questions people ask

2

Should 𑊶 be assembled from Khudawadi A and the E sign?

No. The Khudawadi encoding proposal recommends the independent vowel as one character, rather than Khudawadi A plus a dependent E sign.

Why does 𑊶 appear as a box?

Usually a font or text-shaping gap. The Noto Sans Khudawadi documentation notes, as of 2026, that the script requires software support for complex text layout.
