Brahmi Letter E

16/115

𑀏 is Brahmi’s independent e vowel, written on its own rather than as a mark on a consonant. Early Brahmi appears on pottery and in royal inscriptions; regional forms later developed across South and Southeast Asia. The key distinction is 𑁂, the e sign attached to a consonant.

What 𑀏 means

It writes a vowel without a consonant base. Brahmi is an ancient South Asian writing system; this character represents its e vowel.

A 1996 Cambridge archaeological study called the inscribed pottery at Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, the earliest dated Brahmi examples, placing them at the beginning of the 4th century BCE. The early date is disputed; Ashoka’s rock and pillar edicts from the 3rd century BCE remain the earliest widely accepted large body of decipherable Brahmi writing. These dates concern Brahmi writing overall, not the first appearance of this exact letter form.

Brahmi’s origin is debated; a 2021 comparative study describes a link to Aramaic, an ancient West Asian writing system, as the best-supported account. Pottery inscriptions, seals, and royal edicts show its practical and public uses; later records include donations and religious inscriptions. Early records use Prakrit, a group of languages spoken in ancient South Asia; Sanskrit and regional languages appear in later inscriptions. Regional Brahmi traditions developed into scripts used across South and Southeast Asia. Kharosthi, a separate script used in the northwest, has a clearer Aramaic lineage.

𑀏 vs 𑁂: which is the standalone e?

Use 𑀏 by itself; place 𑁂 after a consonant. The first is an independent vowel letter; the second changes the vowel of the consonant it follows. They are separate characters, not alternate font drawings.
