What 𑀎 means
A syllabic l forms a syllable without another vowel. The shorter independent partner is 𑀍, Brahmi’s vocalic-l letter; 𑀎 marks the long value. After a consonant, Brahmi uses a dependent vowel sign instead of this standalone letter.
A 2008 encoding proposal describes Brahmi’s vocalic-l signs as rare in ordinary texts.
The earliest surviving Brahmi inscriptions are Aśoka’s public edicts—official orders—from the third century BCE. Brahmi first served Middle Indo-Aryan languages, an older Indo-Aryan language group, and was adapted for Sanskrit in the first to third centuries CE. Those dates trace the script, not the first use of this individual letter.
