What ऌ means
Use Unicode input or a character map when your layout lacks it.
These methods enter the standalone vocalic l, also called syllabic l. Do not build it from ल plus ॢ: the dependent sign and standalone letter are separate characters. The CLDR 26 chart lists mappings for ऋ on Android, macOS, and Windows, but none for ऌ; other layouts may differ.
What does ऌ mean in Sanskrit?
It makes l the vowel at the heart of a syllable.
Sanskrit grammar records it in forms of the root √kḷp, a word base meaning “be in order” or “arrange.” After a consonant, the vowel is written with dependent sign ॢ, as in कॢप्ति, meaning “preparation” or “accomplishment.”
Devanagari developed from Brahmi, an earlier South Asian script; 𑀍 is the corresponding Brahmi sign. A headline across Devanagari letterforms appears around 350 CE; mature forms span 800–1200 CE, and the script was treated as fixed by the 11th century.
Is ऌ the same as ऋ or ल?
No: ऌ is vocalic l, ऋ is vocalic r, and ल is consonant la.
Specialist Sanskrit grammar and linguistic contexts; uncommon in everyday Devanagari writing.
Its syllabic sound is l; it is neither ऋ’s r nor consonant ल.
