takri letter e

Takri Letter E

7/68

𑚆 is Takri’s standalone letter for the vowel e. If e follows a consonant, Takri normally uses a separate attached sign instead, so this glyph does not fit every position. Its shape can also vary across regional font styles.

What 𑚆 means

It is Takri’s independent vowel letter for e.

The Takri e is used when the vowel stands on its own, usually at the beginning of a word. After a consonant, Takri normally writes e with the dependent vowel sign e, which attaches to that consonant. The standalone letter and the attached sign do different jobs.

Takri grew through regional use

Takri developed in the western Himalayas through earlier writing traditions. Its documented line runs from Sharada through Devāśeṣa, an intermediate descendant of Sharada, to Takri. Historical accounts place Devāśeṣa in the 13th-century period; Unicode dates the intermediate form’s emergence to the 14th century, so accounts differ on the transition’s timing.

Devāśeṣa served religious and official writing; Takri was used for commerce, personal writing, and regional princely-state administration. Records in the script include manuscripts, inscriptions, land grants, and paintings. Takri is historically related to the Sharada, Landa, and Gurmukhi scripts; Devanagari later displaced it in many settings. Revival work uses Takri to read older Dogri, Kishtwari, and Kulvi literature.
