What थ means
A t at the teeth, released with extra breath.
For the tha pronunciation, touch your tongue to the back of your upper teeth, briefly stop the air, then release it with a puff. This is aspiration. थ is voiceless: your vocal folds do not vibrate.
थ belongs to a script tradition rooted in Brahmi, attested in Emperor Ashoka’s inscriptions in the third century BCE. The northern tradition developed through Gupta and Nāgarī forms into Devanagari. It recorded speech with consonants carrying a built-in vowel and signs for other vowels. Devanagari served Sanskrit manuscripts and inscriptions, then also writing in everyday languages, including Hindi, Marathi, and Nepali.
How do I type थ?
Use a Devanagari keyboard or Latin-letter input.
On the UBC Devanāgarī-QWERTY layout, press ShiftT. In Hindi input that converts Latin letters, enter th and select थ: ठ may also appear. The matching t input can offer त or ट.
थ carries a built-in short a in the script. Vowel signs modify it; virama, a vowel-cancelling mark, removes it. Adjacent consonants can form reduced or joined shapes.
