What ण means
The tongue tip curls back to make this n sound. That position is retroflex; न is dental. Many Hindi dialects pronounce ण closer to न, though spelling preserves the distinction.
Devanagari developed from the older Brahmi script through Gupta and Nagari forms. It emerged from Gupta in the 7th century CE and matured around the 13th century CE, serving Sanskrit inscriptions and religious manuscripts as well as writing in everyday languages.
In Hindi, anusvara is the dot ं; it can mark an n formed where the next consonant is pronounced. Before retroflex ट, it marks the matching n, as in घंटा. ण has not literally changed into ं.

Questions people ask
1Why does ण show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
