What 𑂝 means
Kaithi Nna is the retroflex nasal letter. Its “n” sound is made with the tongue tip curled back.
Kaithi’s exact starting point is unknown, but the script was established by the 16th century: official documents from Sher Shah Suri’s rule use it. It served court and government record-keeping, trade, correspondence, and personal accounts; later manuscripts also used it for literary and religious writing.
Kaithi has documented regional forms associated with Bhojpuri, Magahi, and Maithili. It is closely related to Devanagari and is described as a source for Mahajani and Syloti Nagri, two other regional scripts. This rare letter appears in script charts but seldom in ordinary documents; the Calcutta Bible Society’s Bibles are a notable exception.
